Species that are some of the first to grow on barren lava have to be hearty and drought tolerant. Pāʻūohiʻiaka (Jacquemontia ovalifolia, subsp. sandwicensis) is one such plant. This endemic plant is a coastal dwelling herbaceous vine found on all the islands. The fine hairs on its leaves help to retain moisture in the harsh, high exposure environments it calls home. It’s very ʻauliʻi (dainty and cute) with its small oval leaves and star-shaped pale blue to white flowers. The shape and color of these delicate blossoms is like that of its cousins, the ʻuala and the koali (fellow members of the family Convolvulaceae). Hawaiians made medicine from the leaves and stems of this plant to treat thrush in babies. It can form dense mats that cover large areas. This made it the perfect plant to grow over young Hiʻiaka and protect her from the sun as she slept on the beach while her older sister, Pele, was out surfing (or fishing, as per one version). This is why its name translates to "skirt of Hiʻiaka" (also kākuaohiʻiaka and kaupoʻo). Later, Pele also selected this plant as the binding cord for a pāʻū that she gifted Hiʻiaka when she sent her on the journey to fetch her lover, Lohiʻau, on Kauaʻi. After tying Hiʻiaka’s skirt on snug, Pele called on her brother Kauilanui-maka‘ehaikalani to imbue the skirt with the power of lighting. The foes who crossed Hiʻiaka’s path were no match for the mana of her palekoki uila (lightning skirt). Ka lawalawa kākua o ka pāʻū o ke aliʻi - The binding cord of the chiefess’ skirt.
